Saskatchewan reported the delivery of a record number of second doses of COVID-19 vaccines Monday.
In its daily update, the Ministry of Health said a single-day high of 5,450 people had received their second vaccinations in the latest reporting period. To date, 83,217 people have received both doses and are considered fully vaccinated.
The province also reported 113 new cases, the third-lowest daily number in May. However, only 1,748 tests were processed in the province on Sunday.
The province also announced 174 more recoveries, 109 new cases of variants of concern and one death — a person in their 80s from the Saskatoon zone. So far, 539 Saskatchewan residents have died due to COVID-19.
Vaccination update
There were 8,039 shots given in Saskatchewan, increasing the total so far to 725,648.
The latest doses were administered in the Regina (2,779), Saskatoon (2,650), north-central (507), northwest (497), southeast (475), central-west (263), central-east (229), southwest (183), south-central (140), northeast (112), far northeast (37), far north-central (34) and far northwest (25) zones.
The hometowns of 108 recipients are pending.
The ministry also announced all residents aged 50 and over in the Northern Saskatchewan Administration District are eligible to receive their second doses.
“They can receive their second dose as soon as permitted by the product monograph for the vaccine type they received,” the ministry said. “For Moderna, this is 28 days from the first dose and for Pfizer 21 days from the first dose.”
A look at the numbers
The new cases reported Monday increased the total to date in the province to 46,748.
The new infections were in the Regina (24), Saskatoon (24), south-central (15), northwest (10), north-central (nine), southeast (nine), central-east (eight), far northwest (six), southwest (five) and northeast (one) zones.
Two cases are pending residence information.
In the month of May, the Saskatoon zone reported the most cases, with 1,543 of the 5,650 that were announced by the province. The north (1,202), Regina (1,122), south (987), central (483) and far north (261) were next.
There were 48 deaths due to COVID reported in the province in May.
The 6,660 recoveries announced for the month increased the total to date to 44,841. The number of active cases fell during May from 2,426 to 1,368.
Hospitalizations dropped by 65 during May to the 108 that were reported Monday. That latter figure included 25 intensive care patients — 11 in Saskatoon, eight in Regina, fourth in the north-central zone and one in each of the northwest and central-east regions.
As of Monday, the seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases was 138, or 11.3 per 100,000 people.
The 109 new variant cases increased the total identified by screening so far in the province to 10,732.
