Saskatchewan has passed another vaccination milestone in its fight against COVID-19.
In Saturday’s update, the Ministry of Health said there were 12,923 vaccinations done in the latest reporting period, increasing the province’s total to date to 706,548.
Of the latest vaccinations, 5,095 were second doses, hiking the number of people considered fully vaccinated to 72,818.
As of Saturday, 77 per cent of those aged 40 and over, 71 per cent of those 30 and older and 65 per cent of those 18 and over have received their first dose.
The province also reported 179 new cases, the highest single-day total since there were 180 announced on May 22. There also were 141 recoveries and one death reported.
An individual in their 50s from the Regina zone is the 537th Saskatchewan resident to die due to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.
The number of active cases rose by 37 from Friday’s update to 1,408, ending a string of 13 straight days in which the active caseload fell.
Vaccination update
The latest doses were given in the Saskatoon (4,387), Regina (2,761), southeast (931), central-east (922), north-central (831), southwest (567), northeast (489), south-central (482), northwest (427), central-west (389), far northeast (299), far northwest (205) and far north-central (two) zones.
The hometowns of 231 recipients are pending.
As of Saturday, those aged 70 and over or anyone who received their first dose before March 15 is eligible for a second dose. People who have been diagnosed with or are being treated for cancer and those who have received solid organ transplants are to receive a letter of eligibility in the mail.
A look at the numbers
The new cases were reported in the Saskatoon (38), Regina (27), northwest (21), south-central (19), north-central (18), southeast (18), southwest (11), central-east (10), far northwest (five), far northeast (five), northeast (five) and central-west (two) zones.
The total number of cases in Saskatchewan since March of 2020 stands at 46,464.
The seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases is 129, or 10.5 per 100,000 population.
There were 147 new cases of variants of concern identified by screening in Saskatchewan, upping the total so far to 10,546.
The total number of recoveries to date is 44,519.
The 113 hospitalizations in the province include 24 patients in ICU. Those cases are in the Saskatoon (nine), Regina (eight), north-central (four), northwest (two) and central-east (one) zones.
That’s the fewest ICU cases in Regina since March 8, when there also were eight.
There were 2,933 COVID tests processed in Saskatchewan on Friday, increasing the province’s total to date to 857,297.
