I don’t care if it’s 25,000 or 2,500 — on Saturday, there will be fans in the stands for a sporting event in Canada for the first time since March of 2020.
The night sports turned out the lights nearly 15 months ago was a night that seemed to bring the pandemic to a major reality in North America, and with fans returning in Canada, it starts to feel like the light at the end of the tunnel.
I’ve been jealous seeing the number of stadiums near or at full capacity in sporting venues in the United States. I know many who are cringing at the sight of major crowds and still think it’s risky, but 2,500 in the Bell Centre is a great start to signal the light at the end of the tunnel.
So, thanks to Alex Galchenyuk for that ill-advised pass across the middle that led to Montreal’s overtime goal Thursday and that allows us to see and hear live fans. It signals the long-awaited return for the rest of us to live sports and entertainment venues across the country.
