The absolute stupidity of unwritten rules in baseball and hockey was on full display this week.
First it was baseball, as Yermin Mercedes deserved to get thrown at for hitting a home run on a 3-0 count in a blowout win.
Then it was hockey last night.
Yes, it was awful to see John Tavares stretchered off after taking a Corey Perry knee to the skull in a freak accident.
But Nick Foligno challenging Perry to fight on the ensuing faceoff was absurd. Perry had just skated over to Tavares as he left the ice in a classy gesture from a remorseful opponent to the captain of the Leafs.
So the unwritten rule in hockey is to fight the guy because of an accident? Before the fight, you could tell Shea Weber was trying to talk down Foligno but he wasn’t backing down so Perry dropped his gloves.
And in the end, I was thrilled Montreal won so there is no trash narrative that somehow Foligno picked up his team — because all he did was instigate one of the dumbest and useless fights in hockey history.
