Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in Saskatchewan have reached their lowest level in two months.
In its daily update Wednesday, the Ministry of Health said there were 134 COVID patients in Saskatchewan hospitals. The last time that number was that low was March 19, when 133 people were in hospital due to the virus.
The province also reported 180 recoveries, 141 new cases and 88 new cases of variants of concern. There weren’t any new deaths announced.
The hospitalizations include 28 patients in intensive care, with 16 in Regina, 10 in Saskatoon and two in the north-central zone.
The 106 people receiving inpatient care are in the Regina (42), Saskatoon (42), northwest (six), north-central (five), central-east (five), southwest (two), south-central (two) and southeast (two) zones.
The new COVID cases were reported in the Saskatoon (38), northwest (19), Regina (18), central-east (15), north-central (13), southeast (nine), south-central (seven), far northwest (five), central-west (four), southwest (three), far northeast (one) and northeast (one) zones.
The hometowns of eight new cases are still being determined.
To date, there have been 44,982 cases in the province.
The recoveries reported Wednesday hiked that total so far to 42,674. There are 1,786 cases that are considered active, the lowest that number has been since it was 1,680 on March 26.
The seven-day average of new COVID cases fell to 180, or 14.7 per 100,000 population.
There have been 9,555 cases of variants of concern identified by screening in Saskatchewan and 4,586 variant cases with lineages identified by whole genome sequencing. That comprises 4,477 cases of the U.K. strain, 92 of the Brazilian mutation, 10 of the South African variant and seven of the Indian strain.
The 2,866 tests processed in Saskatchewan on Tuesday increased that total so far to 830,628.
Vaccination update
There were 6,935 doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in the latest update, increasing the total so far to 615,459.
As of Tuesday, 68 per cent of Saskatchewan residents aged 30 and up have got their first shot. The vaccination threshold to reach Step Two of the province’s reopening plan is 70 per cent of those 30 and over.
As well, 50,341 people now have received both doses and are considered fully vaccinated.
The latest shots were given in the Saskatoon (1,705), Regina (1,602), northwest (641), south-central (625), southeast (500), north-central (434), central-east (398), northeast (290), central-west (216), southwest (168), far northwest (84) and far northeast (79).
The hometowns of 193 recipients are pending.
