What do hockey fans want out of the game?
Do they want a highly skilled, fast-paced affair with decent goal-scoring and the odd scrap with players’ health and safety placed in high importance?
Or do they want to see the players police the game and if Tom Wilson has to bounce Artemi Panarin’s skull off the ice to teach him a lesson, so be it?
Because you can’t have it both ways. You’re either one or the other and it appears the NHL still wants to be the latter after Wilson got away with a wrestling throwdown on the hockey ice.
Oh, by the way, that move by Wilson isn’t against the rules, which is why the NHL didn’t fine or suspend him for that act, only for the punch to the back of Pavel Buchnevich’s head.
So if the NHL still wants to be a league of fights, brawls and throwdowns, go nuts. Fill your boots. But stop calling it the department of player safety and call it what it is: The department of making it look like we care about player safety.
