You’re going to hear an awful lot about quarterbacks leading into the NFL draft this week.
It’s expected that for the first time since 1999, the top three picks will be quarterbacks. Jacksonville, the New York Jets and San Francisco all want quarterbacks.
But I’m sorry. I’m having trouble buying into the hype of this draft based on that 1999 draft.
The top three quarterbacks taken were Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb and Akili Smith. Teams had a 33 per cent success rate with those three.
The last two times quarterbacks went No. 1 and No. 2 were Jared Goff and Carson Wentz and before that, Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. None of these quarterbacks are even on their original teams anymore. Goff led the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance at least.
In fact, the last quarterback to win a Super Bowl who was been taken in the top three picks was Eli Manning in 2004.
I hope the best for Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, Trey Lance and Mac Jones. But history tells us the odds are low one of these franchises is going to find their saviour later this week.
