Saskatchewan’s first spring storm of the year is on the way.
Environment Canada has issued weather warnings covering most of the province, warning of strong winds, snow, freezing rain and lower than average temperatures Monday.
Winter storm warnings cover the areas in and around Saskatoon, the Battlefords, Swift Current, Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Kindersley, Martensville, Leader, Melfort, Tisdale, Outlook, Pelican Narrows, La Ronge and Hudson Bay.
“Winter will return abruptly on Monday as a strong low pressure system and cold front track eastwards across the central Prairies. Mild temperatures and rain showers tonight will quickly give way to severe winds, heavy snow, and blowing snow Monday morning as the front passes by,” Environment Canada states on its website.
“The worst of the winds, snow, and blowing snow will continue into the evening before finally easing through the night. Final snowfall totals of about 10 to 15 (centimeters) are expected. Conditions will continue to steadily improve through Tuesday as the low pressure system tracks off into Manitoba.”
Wind warnings cover the areas in and around Regina, Yorkton, Moose Jaw, Moosomin, Maple Creek, Weyburn, Estevan, Kamsack and Carlyle.
“Persons in or near this area should be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and take necessary safety precautions. Watch for updated statements,” the weather agency explained.
Meteorologist Chris Stammers detailed what you can expect.
“It’s a pretty intense low pressure system … It’s going to bring a pretty big mix of weather. Really strong winds will be the main story … The other story will be the pretty strong cold front coming through. You’ll see some pretty mild temperatures (Sunday) and then a pretty abrubt temperature drop (Monday) and along with that there will be some pretty intense flurries that will reduce visibility,” he explained.
Snowfall warnings have been issued for parts of the far north.
Temperatures will start mild in the morning, then lower throughout the day. In the afternoon, it is expected to fall to -5 C in Regina and -7 C in Saskatoon.
The intense wind is expected to kick in at around noon for both the Saskatoon and Regina areas. It will taper off late Monday night for Saskatoon and continue into early Tuesday morning in Regina.
