The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League president, coaches and players are all deserving of sympathy.
Another year has been lost after the provincial government rejected its back-to-play plan. It was supposed to be a hub in Weyburn with just over half the teams participating.
But instead, they’re all going home while up the road in Regina, the WHL hub is full throttle despite Regina being hit hard by COVID-19 variants and now additional health orders.
The Regina variants were part of the reason the government and health authority said no.
Frustration might be an understatement for how those in the SJHL took the news. And there have been plenty of reasons for the SJHL to feel like it’s being treated differently.
The WHL teams got approval to play with a similar plan. The WHL got $3 million from the provincial government to help five teams, while the SJHL got $1 million to help its 12.
There was another thing going the WHL’s way: Timing. The plan was in at a time the government felt comfortable — and all things considered, maybe too comfortable.
