COVID-19 outbreaks have been declared at two of Saskatoon’s ritzier hotels, the Sheraton Cavalier and the James Hotel.
According to the Government of Saskatchewan’s COVID outbreak page, it was declared Tuesday.
Dale Grant is the manager at the Sheraton Cavalier and Kevin Abbott is the operations manager at the James Hotel. Both spoke together to CKOM about the outbreak.
“We have had two confirmed cases, positive cases, with two associates that work in our kitchen in the evening,” said Abbott. “The cases were confirmed earlier this week.”
Grant says the Sheraton and James are owned by the same company and share some services, including kitchen services. The Sheraton provides the James with food services. The two employees who tested positive last worked between Saturday and Sunday.
Between 12 and 15 other kitchen and food service staff are also now isolating.
“Under the direction of the (Saskatchewan Health Authority), they’ve directed any people potentially considered close contact to be quarantined,” said Grant.
All other staff — up to 125 others at both hotels — are also being tested for the virus.
Abbott says for the time being, evening food services at both hotels have also been shut down as a precautionary measure, but also because they now simply don’t have the staff to run the several restaurants and bars at the two buildings.
“We are notifying guests as they come in about all the protocols and about the COVID cases,” said Abbott.
“In terms of our other protocols, we’ve been advised that we’re doing an exceptional job in that regard in terms of our other hotel operation,” added Grant.
The hotels remain open, and lunch services until 2 p.m. are also open to guests.
“We have not been directed to close any of our food service,” said Grant. “Until our staff are through with their quarantining period, we just don’t have enough staff to operate our evening kitchen operations for our outlets.”
Both Grant and Abbott say they have also been tested for the virus. They say they remain busy and are taking all COVID precautions they can in other parts of their establishments.
*Note: Sheraton Cavalier Manager Dale Grant says as of late Thursday afternoon, the 125 employees who were tested for COVID-19 have tested negative.
