A leopard can’t change its spots.
And Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals took 30 months to finally find his way into the ire of the NHL’s Department of Players Safety.
The last suspension was his longest, a 20-game ban for a blindside hit.
This time Wilson went head-hunting again and got a seven-game suspension. The hit sent Brandon Carlo of the Boston Bruins to the hospital.
So why is the suspension less than 20 games? That’s where the suspension should have started.
Wilson was being dubbed a reformed player, much like Matt Cooke was back in the day, but a dirty player is a dirty player. The mindset is always there; it’s just a matter of time when opportunity knocks and the instinct to target the head comes back.
What makes matters worse, his captain, Alex Ovechkin, calls the suspension a joke.
The real joke here is anybody who defends that play as a clean hit.
