The number of COVID-19 vaccinations in Saskatchewan has gone over the 80,000 mark — and that includes residents of every long-term care home in the province.
In its daily COVID update, the Ministry of Health said 80,236 doses of vaccine had been given to date.
The government also said there were 134 new cases in the province and 194 recoveries. Two individuals in the 80-and-over age group — one from each of the Saskatoon and north-central zones — died due to COVID-19.
To date, 387 Saskatchewan residents have died due to the coronavirus.
Vaccination update
The government said first doses had been given at 100 per cent of long-term care homes in the province. In all, 91 per cent of residents opted to get the shot.
“Nine per cent of long-term care home residents were not immunized due to a variety of circumstances, such as the availability of residents at the time of vaccination, refusal to take the vaccine or a change in health status,” the government said in its release.
As well, 53 per cent of the residents in long-term care homes had been given their second doses.
First doses have been delivered at 90 per cent of Saskatchewan personal care homes. Forty-three per cent have received their second doses as well.
“Ensuring seniors living in long-term and personal care homes are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is a priority for the Government of Saskatchewan,” Everett Hindley, the minister of Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors and Rural and Remote Health, said in the release.
“As the supply of vaccine hopefully continues to expand in the coming weeks, we will be able to quickly expand our vaccination efforts for seniors living independently, as well as our other priority groups. We look forward to the day when all Saskatchewan’s seniors are fully vaccinated against the threat of COVID-19.”
Over the course of the past year, there have been more than 40 outbreaks declared at long-term and personal care homes in Saskatchewan and more than 100 deaths.
