The next chapter in Mike Babcock’s road back to the NHL will start with the University of Saskatchewan.
Could you label it the reclamation project?
Babcock is volunteering his time to take over from the retiring Dave Adolph. It’s a two-year term. It goes right along with the more than $11 million he is still owed by the Toronto Maple Leafs until July of 2023.
The Huskies get an accomplished coach who admitted a month ago to Pierre LeBrun in The Athletic that he has some work to do in his coaching philosophy and his behaviour towards players.
A bully is an accusation some former players have made. The worst human he’s ever met, says Johan Franzen. Babcock isn’t denying it either. He won’t. He knows if that’s what players thought of him, that’s their right.
Babcock promises to be a better coach, a better leader and better motivator. Plus, he loves the university game. It’s where he cut his teeth to get to the NHL in the first place. Now, it’s the place he can prove he can coach young players to greatness and shed some of the negative baggage as a path back to the NHL.
