Typically, the small Saskatchewan community of Bradwell hosts a physical fundraiser annually in support of Telemiracle.
But like many things over the past year, the 2021 edition will be different.
Instead of an event such as a dance or a shinny tournament, which have been held in years past, a local group has created what they describe as ‘a mini-Telemiracle,’ a local radio show for the residents of the community to showcase its area talent.
Adele Yanke, president of the town’s community centre board, said the venture is a new event for the community on a local dial.
“It’s going to be running in a similar format, sort of a mini-Telemiracle,” she said. “We’re going to do stories from people in the community that have received funding from Telemiracle (and) hourly totals with what’s come in.”
The local acts that will be playing include Topher Mills, Luke Dukart from “The Dirty Sheets” and Young Guns. Yankey said the event is COVID-safe, adhering to the public health orders in the province.
The event is also being facilitated by Saskatoon’s Cherry Tree House Productions, who will provide the radio and sound equipment.
The goal is to raise more than $1,500 for Telemiracle in 2021, according to Yanke, as they try to pass the community total of $1,465 in 2020.
She said that she understands this past year may have been tough on some in the community, but hopes that people can still donate what they can to the cause.
“I hope they just think about what they can do. In times right now, people may not be able to contribute like they’ve done in the past,” she said.
“Ring those phones, like Telemiracle always says. If you have something to give, give it. If not … I just hope people enjoy the entertainment.”
The local radio show will be broadcast on Friday, Feb. 19 from 6 to 10 p.m., it can be heard locally on 91.1 FM. Residents will be able to call in and pledge funds during the four-hour show, as well.
