On paper, there is no question that the Saskatchewan Roughriders have taken a step back on talent on defence. You can’t lose four all-star-calibre defensive players and think you’d come out better.
But before you start asking for refunds on your season tickets, remember you never know what you have behind these all-stars until you see it.
The Calgary Stampeders have been perennial losers on free-agent day as they lose player after player. But when the season is played, there they are, still first or second in the West and a Grey Cup contender.
To operate within the salary cap and stay competitive, you need to cut ties with top salary-makers to make sure you maintain the depth that it takes to win.
Remember the Stampeders traded Charleston Hughes ahead of the 2018 season and then hoisted the Grey Cup later that same year.
It’s nice to see Roughriders general manager Jeremy O’Day believing in himself and his scouts to shake off losses and believing they’ll find some winners.
Although his philosophy isn’t one that will make him many friends in February, he only cares what you think of him in November.
