The Canadian Olympic Committee has gone to the federal government to discuss a program to get athletes vaccinated ahead of the potential Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.
And while we can shame the committee for trying to get athletes ahead in the line, the criticism once again has to fall on the International Olympic Committee.
The IOC is trying to charge ahead with the Olympics in a country that has states of emergency and a delayed vaccine schedule.
Yet the IOC has told member countries that it wants have all the athletes vaccinated for the Games. So without saying it’s a mandate, it’s a strong recommendation. Now the IOC has its membership having uncomfortable conversations about getting a rush order of vaccines.
Many in Canada are saying pound sand.
But if I’m the COC, instead of going to the Government of Canada, it should be shouting up the chain to the IOC to pound sand. If you delayed it one year, you can delay it another. All signs point to having a double Olympics in 2022.
It would take tremendous pressure off everyone as 2022 now appears to be the more likely year we can get back to normal, if anyone actually remembers what that is.
