We are one day into the NHL season and we’re already getting to hear how a fight really turned a game around.
Yes, the Toronto Maple Leafs and those who love them believe Wayne Simmonds’ fight midway through the second period with Toronto down 3-1 helped turn the tide of the game.
Please. Can we stop with this nonsense?
Simmonds was out of the penalty box before the Leafs even scored the next goal.
Oh, and it also helped that the Montreal Canadiens took three penalties in the span of two minutes, including handing Toronto a five-on-three power play.
Fans of fighting are so quick to justify dropping the gloves and fans of fighting eat it up like buttered popcorn during a blockbuster.
There is a place for it, but there is no reason to make up a silly narrative. There are only two things that turned that game around and it wasn’t Simmonds’ fists. It was Montreal’s lack of discipline and Toronto’s power play.
