Hot ashes were the cause of a New Year’s Eve garage fire in Grosvenor Park that caused $75,000 in damage, fire investigators discovered.
The Saskatoon Fire Department was called to the home in the 200 block of Lake Crescent at 10:33 a.m. Thursday.
Three trucks, a battalion chief and a fire investigator were sent to the scene.
Fire was contained to a detached garage. A news release from Saskatoon Fire said the garage contained “a significant number of items” that helped supply the fire and made it difficult for firefighters to access.
Once the fire was extinguished, the fire investigator determined the fire started from “improperly” disposed of woodstove ash.
The Saskatoon Fire Department is reminding people that ashes from wood-burning appliances, including fire pits, can remain dormant for days and can cause unintended fires if not disposed of correctly.
