There is a COVID twist on a holiday tradition in Saskatoon.
The Saskatoon Blades can’t stage their annual Teddy Bear Toss during a WHL game, so the event has been revamped to comply with current public health guidelines.
“Just wing it from the window,” Blades communications manager Mitch Bach said Friday on the Brent Loucks Show as he explained how the drive-through teddy toss will work.
“For us to have found a way to continue on a tradition that has routinely been very successful for the Blades in the past, it’s exciting for us and we’re looking forward to it.”
On Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., people can drive into the SaskTel Centre and toss their new or gently used bears into an inflatable rink. The bears are then handed over to the Salvation Army to help spread Christmas cheer.
The Blades are encouraging the public to wrap their bears in a plastic bag before they enter the arena, but complimentary bags will be available at the gates.
Bach said the team is taking safety very seriously.
“WINMAR restoration services has kindly offered to put these teddy bears through a very thorough sanitation process to make sure all the teddys are safe and handed off in a secure manner,” he said.
Thousands of teddy bears have been donated in the event over the years.
