A 40-year-old man from the RM of Canwood is facing a number of firearms-related charges after he allegedly shot in the direction of an RCMP traffic stop Saturday.
According to the RCMP, an officer from the Big River detachment pulled over a driver at about 9:45 p.m., on a rural road south of Debden.
The Mounties say the officer heard “what he believed to be a firearm being discharged in the direction of the traffic stop from a nearby residence.” The person who had been stopped by the officer took off on foot.
The officer drove to the house where he thought the shot had come from and found a man standing outside holding a gun.
Officers from the Ahtahkakoop, Shellbrook, Blaine Lake and Spiritwood detachments, a conservation officer from the Ministry of Environment and the Saskatchewan RCMP Emergency Response Team were called and helped set up a perimeter to secure the house.
On Saturday at about 1 a.m., officers found the man in the backyard of the house and took him into custody. A search of the house discovered four other guns and ammunition.
The man was charged with two counts of pointing a firearm and one count each of discharging a firearm while being reckless, discharging a firearm with intent, unsafe storage of firearms, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and resisting arrest.
According to the Mounties, the person who had been pulled over during the traffic stop was later found uninjured at their home.
