With the first significant winter storm of November expected this weekend, the Government of Saskatchewan and community-based organizations have launched the Cold Weather Strategy.
In a media release Friday, the Ministry of Social Services said it’s working with community partners to make sure everyone has a place to sleep during cold weather.
The ministry said it “may pay for individuals or families to stay at emergency shelters or hotels in the local or surrounding community.”
“Saskatchewan winters can be unpredictable for those who do not have a warm, safe place to call home,” Social Services Minister Paul Merriman said in the release.
“Social Services Pandemic Response plan and the Cold Weather Strategy will run alongside each other to make sure that everyone has safe shelter from the cold this winter.”
In Regina, the Cold Weather Strategy group comprises the ministry as well as 10 community organizations, including the City of Regina, the Salvation Army, the YWCA Regina, Carmichael Outreach and Mobile Crisis Services.
In Saskatoon, 16 organizations make up the group. They include the Salvation Army, Lighthouse Supported Living, Saskatoon Crisis Intervention Services, the YWCA and the Safe Streets Commission.
People in other communities in the province who require shelter are urged to contact the nearest Ministry of Social Services office. A list of those centres can be seen below.
Those individuals also can contact an emergency shelter, Mobile Crisis Services (if it’s available in their community) or the police.
