Saskatchewan reported a record 129 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday.
Technical issues at the Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory resulted in just 37 new cases being reported Wednesday. But the Ministry of Health said in a media release Thursday that only nine positive results had been found among the samples that hadn’t been tested — and they’re to be included in Friday’s numbers.
The previous single-day high of 82 new cases was reported Oct. 29.
Of the new cases reported Thursday, the Saskatoon area produced 55 and the north-central zone recorded 30. The remainder were in the Regina area (13), the northwest (10), the far northwest (six), the central-east (four), the south-central (two), the far northeast (one), the central-west (one), the southwest (one) and the southeast (one) regions.
The hometowns of five of the new cases are pending.
It was determined that one case reported Tuesday is an out-of-province resident, so the provincial total now stands at 3,536.
There were 50 recoveries reported, increasing that total so far to 2,634. To date, 25 residents have died due to COVID complications.
The number of active cases being reported in Saskatchewan is now at an all-time high of 877.
There are 32 people in hospital, with five in intensive care. Three of those individuals are in Saskatoon, with one in each of the north-central and Regina regions.
The 27 people receiving inpatient care are in the Saskatoon zone (10), the north-central area (eight), the Regina region (five), the northwest (three) and the far northwest (one).
Since March, there have been 942 cases in the Saskatoon area, 755 from the north area, 508 from the south, 466 cases in the Regina region, 456 from the far north, and 402 in the central zone. Residences are pending for seven cases.
The total number of cases comprises 1,690 community contacts, 847 cases without any known exposures, 619 cases that are under investigation, and 380 travellers.
To date, 108 health-care workers have contracted the virus.
There have been 1,282 cases in the 20-to-39 age range, 1,003 from ages 40 to 59, 720 involving people 19 and under, 442 between the ages of 60 and 79, and 89 aged 80 and over.
The 2,322 tests done in the province on Wednesday increased the total to date to 273,520.
There have been 29,173 tests done in Saskatchewan on children aged 19 and under since Sept. 7. As of Thursday, there were 211 active cases among that age group.
