For the second time in a week, the Saskatoon sky was filled with smoke.
The Saskatoon fire department was called at 5:17 a.m. on Wednesday about a grass fire off 11th Street just east of Highway 7.
Crews arrived to find ten round hay bales on fire in a field. The wind pushed the smoke into the city, affecting neighbourhoods like Montgomery where residents complained about poor air quality.
“Ten of those large bales. That is a significant amount of fuel,” said deputy fire Chief Wayne Rodger.

The fire department brought in a front loader to pull apart the bales and let the fire burn out. It was declared extinguished shortly after 10 a.m.
The cause remains under investigation, but Rodger said the circumstances are suspicious.
