Saskatoon’s Fall Street Sweeping Program is expected to begin in just a couple of weeks and will run for about 10 days, from Oct. 13 -23.
And this time, those who don’t move their vehicles when the sweepers are in their area will likely be fined up to $100 dollars.
During the Spring Street Sweeping Program, council decided to forego issuing any tickets. At that time, the pandemic was in its early days, more people were at home, kids were out of school and many businesses were still closed.
That’s not likely to be the case in October.
The recommendation from Transportation Department Manager Terry Schmidt is to warn drivers with information campaigns and sandwich signs indicating that they won’t get a break this time around.
“Advertising and notifications will include the placement of the yellow ‘No parking’ sandwich boards, placement on maps and on social media, ads and communications with community associations, and reaching out to local media.”
Schmidt says administration will be returning to standard operations during the fall sweep and will tow and ticket those who don’t comply.
During the fall of 2019, about 550 tickets were handed out, garnering about $55,000 in revenue for the city.
A city report indicates if fines aren’t issued this fall, drivers may become complacent about moving their vehicles, there may be delays in the program delivery, and it would again cost the city money to tow the vehicles that aren’t moved.
On-street parking and residential parking restrictions are now also being enforced.
City council still has the final say on Monday.
