A 31-year-old man has been arrested after a woman was physically and sexually assaulted in a back alley in the Riversdale neighbourhood.
At around 6:45 a.m. on Sunday, officers responded to a report that a woman was being assaulted in an alley in the 200 block of Avenue D South.
When they arrived, the suspect fled the area on foot.
The man is said to have allegedly encountered the woman in front of a nearby business and lead her into a back alley where the assault occurred.
The canine unit was deployed and was successful in locating the suspect who was transported to the hospital for treatment of dog bites, before being taken to SPS Detention.
As the suspect exited the patrol vehicle upon arrival at SPS Detention, he immediately fled on foot and attempted to escape custody by climbing a fence.
The man is charged with assault, sexual assault, escape lawful custody and breaching his court conditions.
The suspect is believed to have been under the influence of some sort of substance.
The victim sustained minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene.
The suspect and victim are not believed to have known each other.
