The fall semester has barely started at the University of Regina, but the school already has decided to extend its strategy of remote learning into the winter semester.
Due to COVID-19, the university is delivering courses primarily online this fall. In a media release Thursday, the U of R said it would continue with that plan into the winter semester, which is to begin Jan. 11.
It said the decision was made “based on current information,” and with the health and safety of students, faculty and staff as the top priority.
“Courses will primarily be delivered remotely with the exception of a limited number of low-density face-to-face classes, labs, studios and clinical placements,” the release said.
“This approach offers students the best chance of academic success as we continue to navigate the rapidly changing landscape of the global pandemic. It also aligns with other post-secondary partners in the province.”
The university said its Academic Incremental Recovery group will determine which course elements can be delivered in person, provided safety protocols are in place.
“With today’s announcement, the University of Regina, our federated colleges, and our provincial partners have set our direction for the winter 2021 term,” Thomas Chase, the university’s interim president and vice-chancellor, said in the release.
“I am confident that the time, energy and resources we are investing in remote learning will continue to result in a delivery model that meets teaching, learning, and research needs while keeping people safe.”
