With just weeks to go before the provincial election, Saskatchewan’s Liberal Party has lost its leader.
Naveed Anwar has announced his resignation as the party’s leader, effective immediately. He has held the position since May of 2018.
“Upon personal reflection, I have decided to focus my time and energy on social causes outside of politics,” the Saskatoon resident said in a media release.
“I thank all those who have supported me during my political career. I will remain thankful for the rest of my life as they are assets in my heart.”
The party says it will start the process of appointing an interim leader, who is expected to be in place before the provincial election. The election likely will be held Oct. 26, although a date hasn’t been officially announced.
The Liberals don’t hold a seat in the Saskatchewan legislature.
