The rest of the WHL may be quietly celebrating the fact Kelly McCrimmon has sold the Brandon Wheat Kings.
It’s only because they must feel like they have a better chance at success.
McCrimmon has been a fantastic ally and top owner in the league since he bought a minority share in Brandon back in 1992.
The Plenty product is now running the Vegas Golden Knights closer and closer to a Stanley Cup championship and you can understand why trying to run the Wheat Kings to the standard he’s set for himself has become impossible.
The impact on the franchise is undeniable. In the decade before McCrimmon joined the ownership group, the Wheat Kings missed the playoffs eight times in a decade. Since ’92, they’ve missed the playoffs a total of three times in 28 years.
The Wheat Kings have four Memorial Cup appearances, hosting twice and winning two WHL championships.
McCrimmon has owned, coached and managed the Wheat Kings to perennial contender status, which is incredibly difficult in junior hockey.
And it should be no surprise that he’s already having similar success in the National Hockey League.
