The hearts had to melt of every person who saw Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet reunite with his kids after almost two months apart. Yes, the NBA is allowing families to enter the Orlando bubble.
Meanwhile, in Canada, NHL players are still not sure when or even if they’ll see family.
It was in the back-to-work plan that families would join the players in the bubble when it came down to the final four. With the conference finals starting soon, there is still no plan agreed to between the NHL, the players’ association and those with the final say — officials with the Alberta health authority, since the final four is to be played in Edmonton.
I ask: Why wasn’t this taken care of in the first place? Why has no agreement been in place for the quarantine and travel well before now?
I find it downright disrespectful that the league has asked the players to do this bubble life, promised them their partners and kids will join them and still hasn’t received clear direction from the province to execute the plan.
The NHL got what it wanted, with TV revenue and sponsorship to have hockey back. Hopefully the players get to have their families with them when they hoist the Stanley Cup.
