COVID-19 restrictions are forcing the RCMP to change its annual national memorial service for fallen officers in 2020.
In a media release Friday, the RCMP said the Sept. 13 service will be held online only.
Only two troops of cadets and critical staff will be in attendance as part of a shortened program.
Families, colleagues and friends of the fallen officers will be able to watch the event online at 10 a.m. in English or French.
As well, the Mounties announced that no names will be added to the cenotaph, honour roll or memorial wall this year.
“This decision was not made lightly and involved the families of recently fallen members, Constable Allan Poapst and Constable Heidi Stevenson,” the RCMP said in the release.
A formal memorial service will be held when COVID-19 restrictions are eased.
“All of us want to serve and protect Canadians,” Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Breton, the commanding officer of Depot Division, said in the release.
“The health and safety of our members, families and cadets — as well as the prosperity of the training program as a whole — is dependent on everyone following strict COVID-19 protocols.
“As an organization, the RCMP must adapt to the challenges in front of us while understanding the importance of tradition.”
