Chadwick Boseman, known for his roles as Jackie Robinson and Black Panther, died on Friday at the age of 43.
His official Twitter account announced his passing, noting the well-known actor had been battling colon cancer for four years.
“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” the statement on his Twitter page read, noting he filmed several movies “during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy.”
Boseman rose to fame in 2013 for his portrayal of Jackie Robinson in 42, which depicted the rise of the man who helped break the colour barrier in Major League Baseball. His death came on Jackie Robinson Day in the U.S.
He also played the role of James Brown in Get On Up, and later brought his talents to the comic book world by bringing Black Panther to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life,” the statement on his Twitter said.
Boseman died at home with his wife and family at his side.
