Tuesday night showcased why video review is necessary but also a pain in the butt for the National Hockey League.
Exhibit A: A Tampa Bay Lightning goal was overturned as a Tampa forechecker crossed the blue line a hair before his teammate left the zone for a change.
It was 16 seconds before the goal was scored by the Lightning and the Boston Bruins had played the puck before turning it over. That offside did NOT impact the play.
Exhibit B: The Vancouver Canucks’ Brock Boeser cleared the puck over the glass and was called for the mandated delay of game penalty. Quickly, the replay showed the puck deflected off the glass, which should have negated the penalty. But nope, can’t review that one.
The Vegas Golden Knights had a chance to tie the game 2-2 on the power play and could have turned the tide of the game.
It’s embarrassing to watch common sense get thrown out the window, but that’s nothing new when we talk about video replay in any sport.
