The CFL opt-out window is open and the list continues to grow of players wanting to keep their options open.
The deadline to opt out of a CFL deal in order to get an NFL tryout or contract is next Monday and already we’ve seen Dakoda Shepley, Brett Lauther and Deon Lacey opt out for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
But in no way should you consider this a major talent drain to the National Football League. There is no guarantee any of these players actually get a shot with NFL teams, who have already started their training camps and usually have limited roster space now that they’ve done the work to bring in 90 players.
There could be some practice roster positions but the odds any of these CFLers will be playing on Sundays aren’t great.
The opt-outs should be a no-brainer for some players who already have had some NFL interest and put out good film in the last season or so.
And if I’d wager a guess, over 90 per cent of these players who opt out in the next week will return to the CFL in 2021 — if, of course, they have a job to come back to.
