A 24-year-old man is facing several firearms-related charges after evading police on Friday night.
In a release, police say at around 9:30 p.m., a member of the Canine Unit saw a vehicle without a licence plate speeding on Alberta Avenue near 36th Street East. When the officer tried to do a traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle refused to stop.
The Air Support Unit saw the vehicle on Howell Avenue and relayed its movement to ground units, who were able to successfully deploy a tire deflation device.
The vehicle then collided with a park, unoccupied vehicle in the 900 block of Avenue D North. The lone occupant took off on foot.
The air unit then directed ground units to Willingdon Place, where the suspect was taken into custody without incident.
The vehicle was found to be stolen and a sawed-off rifle was located inside. The weapon was loaded.
The 24-year-old is charged with:
- Possession of a dangerous weapon
- Careless use of a firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
- Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition
- Possession of a weapon obtained by commission of an offence
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Evading police
- Possession of stolen property under $5,000
- Prohibited operation of a motor vehicle
- Breach of court conditions
