There are separate tornado and severe thunderstorm watches is in effect for many areas in Saskatchewan’s north-central.
Environment Canada issued both watches just after 11 a.m. Saturday.
The Meadow Lake, Prince Albert and La Ronge region are currently under a tornado watch.
The city of Saskatoon, Martensville, Warman, The Battlefords and Buffalo Narrows are all dealing with a severe thunderstorm watch.
The Humboldt and Melfort regions had their thunderstorm watch updated to a warning just after 5:30 p.m.
Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that could produce damaging wind gusts, hail and heavy rain.
An upper disturbance is being tracked across central Saskatchewan, with thunderstorms having the potential to become severe.
“We actually have a set-up that is quite conducive to the development of supercells in the northern grain belt of Saskatchewan,” Environment Canada’s Shannon Moodie explained.
“There is a risk of tornados today. We’ll likely see watches being issued later today, this afternoon, that threat will last through the evening.”
