The closure of the Canada-U.S. border has been extended into September.
Public Safety Minister Bill Blair made the announcement on Twitter on Friday.
“We are extending the reciprocal restrictions at the Canada-US border for another 30 days, till Sept. 21, 2020,” Blair wrote. “We will continue to do what’s necessary to keep our communities safe.”
The 30-day restrictions were first imposed in March in the face of the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic and have been extended five times. The latest extension comes as the United States deals with another spike in case numbers.
While the restrictions prohibit discretionary travel like vacations and shopping trips, essential workers, trade shipments and temporary foreign workers are still allowed to cross the border.
More to come.
