Once again, the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs are high on expectations and end up low on results.
The Oilers’ four-game loss to Chicago in the qualifying round is far more embarrassing than Toronto’s latest loss in a winner-take-all game against Columbus.
But can we really put a lot of analysis on the qualifying round of this twisted and rushed back-to-play plan by the NHL?
All these teams got a short camp and one pre-tournament game and then had to find their competitive edge in less than a week to advance.
Look at Boston and St. Louis. They were the best in their respective conferences in March, but weren’t able to get a single victory in their three round-robin qualifying games, falling to the fourth seed for Round 1.
I really don’t want to give the Oilers and Leafs a pass on their latest failures but they weren’t the only teams unable to find their game quick enough in this odd conclusion to the 2019-20 season.
