8:30 – We’ve heard a lot of parents and teachers upset over the Saskatchewan back-to-school plan, which aimed to make schooling as normal as possible while keeping kids protected from COVID-19. Michael Zwaagstra, a teacher and educational theorist, says normal should be the goal as schools resume in September because young students learn best through direct interaction with their teachers and peers. While some have suggested half-day schooling to reduce class sizes and allow for better distancing, Zwaagstra says such a model wouldn’t be an effective way to contain the virus and would be a nightmare to coordinate. Zwaagstra joins Mike to tell us why he thinks normal schooling is the best choice, even during a pandemic.
