He says creating a design for shirts has been on his bucket list. When he recently heard about the Saskatoon Community Response Fund, which connects those able to help financially with the agencies that need the support, he knew it was something he wanted to get behind.
“I thought this is perfect! I am not about making any money on it, let’s make every dollar go towards this foundation and this response fund,” he said. “I think about people like you and me, and (the pandemic) has been tough and we are seeing a lot of changes and people losing their jobs, but for the most part still able to have the means to have shelter and food, and I was thinking a lot about our most vulnerable population and just how hard it is for them as well.”
The shirts say “We Got This #YXE” with a picture of the Broadway Bridge that was photographed by local photographer Scott Prokop.
“I reached out to him and asked if he was cool with me using it for the project and when he found out it was for charity he was totally on board.”
Watty says the picture of the bridge was very fitting for his project.
“When I think of a bridge I think of things like connection, and foundation and resiliency and these are terms that define our community and the citizens that are here and it’s really been demonstrated on a large scale through this whole pandemic.”
Sales started to really take off and Watty was backlogged when Steve Sarich with Schmatta reached out and said he wanted to help.
“He said as orders come in daily you can send me the numbers and the sizes and we can quickly get them done and get them out to people.”
The T-shirts are available online now at iamwatty.com and starting Tuesday, the shirts will be available at Schmatta downtown Saskatoon. They cost $28 with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to Saskatoon charities.
“I think it’s really been cool to see that despite the fact that we have been apart, the city really has come together in a big way and it’s sort of neighbourly love and looking out for eachother. I just think that as we open up some of these restrictions and get our economy open up again, just to throw on a shirt and show some pride for Saskatoon and the way we have handled the whole thing,” he said.
“We’ve said it numerous times in the last eight to 10 weeks that we’re all in this together – well, you know what, let’s show that we really ARE all in this together.”
