Today marks two months since the NBA announced it was shutting down with a player testing positive for COVID-19.
The NHL and Major League Baseball followed suit.
But this weekend we saw what the future of sports looks like with UFC 249.
No crowd. No reactions to anything other than by the broadcasters. “Weird” was the most common word used when describing this.
While the other major sports leagues are going through their own due diligence, the UFC kicked and punched the door open to show other leagues a way to get things done. Pay-per-view buys were far higher than the five most recent fights, showing again, like the NFL draft, sports fans are starving for content.
UFC did have three positive tests from a fighter and two of his support staff. If, although unlikely, an outbreak happens, it’ll give everyone pause once again.
Consider this weekend’s event the canary in the coal mine. Everyone should be watching the UFC, not for the competition necessarily, but the possibility it has led the way to the path that we get other major sports back before summer begins.
