The City of Regina is asking residents to help say thank you to frontline workers while staying home.
“We can’t thank people enough for what they’re doing for us. We’re in a new different era, we don’t know where this is going to go in many ways with this pandemic and we have people who are consistently helping us all the time and putting themselves in harm’s way for us,” Mayor Michael Fougere told the Greg Morgan Morning Show on Friday.
“This kind of celebration, this cheer is done around the world and I think we should be doing this here in Regina to just show our support, to let everyone know who is going out every day to their shift work that we thank them from the bottom of our hearts.”
The Cheer for Heroes asks Regina residents to congregate on their front steps, lawns, porches and balconies to support the people continuing to work to keep the city safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It can be done by cheering, playing instruments and making as much noise as possible for five minutes. The cheer is set for Friday at 7 p.m. — when many shift workers go on or off shift — and is to be a weekly event.
Fougere said there are lots of stories about different people making a difference during the pandemic.
“These are wonderful stories about real-life situations that show people are heroic and I really praise a lot of them for doing what they’re doing,” he said.
Fougere said many people deserve the cheer including health-care workers, police officers, firefighters, transit workers and grocery store employees.
