The Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) is coming together with volunteers, individual donors, and 9 other organizations to provide food for the hungry.
Starting Thursday, it will be delivering meals to over 1400 people across 435 households in inner-city neighbourhoods.
Lunch and supper will be provided every day until June 30.
Saskatoon Wildlife Federation, Saskatoon Public Schools, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, Nutrien, Federated Co-op, Saskatoon Community Action Alliance, Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation and the provincial government are all providing funding, volunteers, or both.
STC Chief Mark Arcand joined The Brent Loucks Show on 650 CKOM to discuss the program.
He explained he felt something had to be done after the White Buffalo Lodge in-person services had to be shut down due to COVID-19.
“All of the counseling, all of the services that were needed for inner-city, vulnerable people were cancelled,” Arcand explained.
“We turned White Buffalo into a food service (facility), because we wanted to follow the public health orders of the province which were to keep people at home and keep them safe.”
He believes it’s important to work together to help people through difficult times.
“We want to help everybody. We want to keep everybody safe, because if one hurts, we all hurt. If we all succeed, that’s the best thing we can do for this province and this country.”
Anyone who wants to pitch in by volunteering or donating can head to the Saskatoon Tribal Council website or contact Arcand at 306-956-6100.
