EGADZ, a non-profit community group that supports young people and their families, received a generous donation this week from an anonymous donor.
“A gentleman just pulled right up and he said he had some donations and there was an enclosed trailer,” EGADZ executive director Don Meikle said. “He opened the doors and it was jammed packed full of food.”
In among the food were other much-needed goods like toilet paper and Lysol wipes.
The donation came as Meikle said EGADZ is delivering more than 60 food packs a day.
“It came at an unbelievably perfect time because we’re only allowed to give out what we’ve got,” he explained.
Meikle said the man in the truck didn’t want to give his name but did offer to help make food packs if they needed a hand.
“We were a little worried we weren’t going to have enough food (during the pandemic). Even the food bank has given us some food,” Meikle said. “Everybody’s sharing and everybody’s caring. It’s really heartwarming in this time.”
It’s not just the anonymous donor who is helping; some businesses in Saskatoon have stepped up to the plate too.
“Last week we had a large donation from Mano’s Restaurant when they closed,” Meikle said. “Sobey’s in Stonebridge—Neil over there gave us $1,000 worth of meat, bread and cheese to make sandwiches for people.”
Despite the generosity EGADZ has already seen, Meikle says there’s always need.
“We need diapers, formula, non-perishables, meats and things that we can cook and send out,” he said. “Just whatever you can spare.”
EGADZ runs several programs in the city including a drop-in centre, residential program, outreach services and education and employment support.
