I was pondering what kind of trivial distraction we were talking about in the world of sports a month ago, before COVID-19 took over our lives and sports went black.
David Ayres is the answer.
I went back, curious to see what was going on at this time in February when sports were on and we were allowed to go to bars and share a pint with friends, debating the nightly headlines and if the Leafs were good enough to actually do something this year.
It was a month ago — well, just over, to be exact — that David Ayres wowed us on Hockey Night in Canada, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a win over Toronto.
Ayres then travelled to New York to do the talk-show circuit and they rolled out the red carpet for him in Carolina. It was the ultimate Pros vs. Joes scenario — a Zamboni-drivin’ goalie beating the Toronto Maple Leafs.
It’s a storyline we would so desperately love to have again, even if it’s just to be able to mock our favourite Leafs fans over a pint at our favourite local bar.
