People in Saskatoon who still need to pop into businesses along streets in downtown, Riversdale and Broadway won’t have to worry about touching parking meters beyond Friday.
City councillors Cynthia Block and Darren Hill announced on social media that the city was cancelling paid parking as of Friday night in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Effective by end of day in Saskatoon:
On street paid parking will be suspended. No charge.
No time limit for on street parking in paid zones. #yxe #yxecc #covid19

The move means no payment will be needed in paid on-street parking zones, and three-hour time limits will not be enforced.
Off-street parking operated by private companies isn’t included in the initiative.
City councillors asked administration to take action after pressure from business improvement districts across Saskatoon.
Honestly, why keep paid parking downtown?!? And on Broadway? We want more take away and quick trips not fussing and touching the meters. Make a three hour limit, I don’t care, but don’t make people pay for Pete’s sake!!

“We are in extraordinary times,” Block told 650 CKOM.
“The city is doing the best it possibly can to alleviate any pressures on businesses and anybody else using the downtown or other paid parking zones in the city.”
It’s unclear how long the measures will be in effect.
The move comes one day after city council voted to remove time restrictions on residential parking, cancelled bus fares and approved grace periods for municipal bill payments.
