Saskatoon firefighters had a busy night in the Pleasant Hill neighbourhood on Tuesday, dealing with three fires and the risk of electric shock from damaged power lines, all within two blocks of each other.
One firetruck and its crew were already on the scene of a dumpster fire in the 1400 block of 20th Street W., when they spotted a garage fire one block east, on the same street.
“Two more engines, one rescue, one ladder truck and a battalion chief all responded to the scene; a second engine was then dispatched to the original dumpster fire,” a media release from the Saskatoon fire department said.
Those firefighters dealing with the scene on the 1300 block of 20th Street W. found an originating fire between two garages; it was that fire that set the two garages ablaze.
They got the first garage fire out quickly, but the one in the second garage damaged a nearby power line. The power line was arcing and shooting electrical surges, “causing firefighters to proceed with extreme caution,” the release said.
However, firefighters subdued both fires in about 40 minutes and searched both buildings.
No one was injured in the fires.
Fire investigators are working to figure out what caused them.
