TORONTO — Expansion Atletico Ottawa has signed midfielder Ajay Khabra, who spent last season with his hometown FC Edmonton in the Canadian Premier League.
The 24-year-old, a product of the FC Edmonton academy, made 24 appearance with Edmonton including 21 as a starter. He spent five seasons at the University of Alberta, scoring the winning goal against UQAM in the U Sports championship game in 2016.
“Ajay’s strength, technique and ability to cover ground make him an exciting addition to our midfield,” Atletico Ottawa CEO Fernando Lopez said in a statement. “We can’t wait to witness his impact on our team.”
In other CPL news, HFX Wanderers FC has brought in striker Will Baynham on trial.
The 22-year-old led the Big West Conference in scoring with 10 goals in 24 games for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. Six of his goals were game-winners. Baynham was recently on trial with Phoenix Rising of the USL Championship.
“He has done well at the NCAA Division 1 level,” Wanderers coach Stephen Hart sad. “He holds the ball up well, his movement is good and he showed he can finish both on the ground and in the air.
“We’ll see how he adapts, it would be nice if he can add a different dimension to our attacking options.”
Baynham was born in Brisbane, Australia, but has Canadian citizenship through his Ottawa-born father.
