The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball team has punched its ticket to the national championship game Sunday at Carleton University in Ottawa.
The Huskies cruised past the University of Laval Rouge et Or 76-57 in the semi-finals on Saturday.
The Huskies will face off against the Brock University Badgers with a chance to win their second national championship in the last five years.
Leading the charge for the Huskies was fifth-year player Megan Ahlstrom with 16 points, earning her Player of the Game honours. She says there is lots of excitement right now but their focus remains on tomorrow’s tough test.
“Brock is extremely skilled they have been playing really good basketball, they look fearless out there and I think we just have to contain their guards. They have a really good point guard and their shooters have been shooting really well right now,” said Ahlstrom.
“So I know that we will be checking out the scout tonight and tomorrow morning and coach will get us really prepared and feeling good for tomorrow.”
Ahlstrom says the key for them tomorrow is playing a cohesive team game with everybody executing their roles.
“Our team is experienced and has been there before so I think just trying to remain calm tomorrow and just perform my role. I’m not necessarily a scorer but I’m going to crash the rebounds hard, I’m going to be gritty and I’m going to be aggressive and that’s what I’m going to do tomorrow,” she said
The gold medal game tips off Sunday at 5 p.m. ET.
