Anglers in Saskatchewan should start preparing to remove their ice fishing shelters from the province’s bodies of water.
According to the provincial government, fishing shelters south of Highway 16 must be removed by March 15. Shelters north of the Yellowhead have to be taken off the ice by March 31.
In a media release, the government said ice fishing shacks that are abandoned pose dangers to boaters, water skiers and others after the ice melts.
“If shelters are not removed, owners may be prosecuted and the structure and contents may be moved off the ice and confiscated,” the media release said. “Structures must be moved to a location where they can be loaded and transported to the owner’s residence or property.”
Owners also are reminded to remove all litter when they take their shelters off the ice.
