For as long as fantasy football leagues have been in existence, so have punishments for the losers of those leagues.
Some have a commemorative trophy that goes to the worst player —other’s force the loser to do something embarrassing.
For the last two years Regan McGrath and his league have hosted a stand up comedy night to embarrass their league member and raise money for charity at the same time.
“So I didn’t think I’d ever lose so I thought well perfect this will be a great opportunity,” he said.
“Then I got stuck in a combine with no service, so here I am in a combine and I’m drafting my team on the phone with my wife.”
Needless to say, McGrath lost and had to perform stand up in front of their nearly 125 guests.
“I went for 25 minutes and told some stories, made fun of some of my friends. I got (another group) to agree that this will be a punishment in another league but the other guy didn’t show up,” he said.
“So, I spent a bit of time making up some untrue stuff about him. Like you know how he believes in conspiracy theories and how he wanted to donate all the money to his political party.”
Their event was sponsored by Great Western Brewery and Lucky Bastard Distillers and hosted at a mutual friends venue on Broadway. They raised $3,600 for the Canadian Mental Health Association.
The performers included McGrath, three other local amateur comedians and Kelly Taylor as the headliner.
